Asthma and COVID-19 – Dr Zahia Chahine El Sett

Experts confirm that Asthmatic patients don’t face a higher risk of contracting COVID-19, but they do face a higher risk of serious illness if they contract with the virus (ACAAI), and there is no evidence that asthma medications used to prevent symptoms, such as inhaled steroids, oral steroids, anti leukotrienes, and biologics, increase the risk of contracting COVID-19.

Chronic Asthmatics have low lung reserve to deal with a process that limits the ability to get oxygen, they have to prevent exacerbation by:
-Social distancing
-Maintain using chronic medications
-Be sure to have an ample supply of medications on hand, including rescue inhalers
-Manage the stress

Staying indoors may increase exposure to certain asthma triggers, precautions at home are:
-keep all pets out of their room
-Try to maintain a dust-free environment
-Avoid any type of smoke
-Maintain low humidity to reduce mold and dust mites.
– in spring, windows also should be kept closed to reduce exposure to pollen.

Asthmatics diagnosed with COVID-19 should use an inhaler at home away from family members, since the coronavirus spreads via exhaled droplets of water.
Lastly, patients experiencing any change respiratory symptoms, such as shortness of breath, a new or worsening cough, a fever, or severe body aches should reach out to a care provider at the early onset of symptoms.
